What these memberships actually are
Premium and super-premium cards commonly bundle a complimentary subscription, most often to a streaming service like Amazon Prime, Netflix or SonyLIV, alongside travel-adjacent perks like airport meet and assist (a staff member who guides you through check-in and security) or a general concierge line for booking restaurants, gifts or travel.
Why these almost never activate automatically
Nearly every version of this benefit requires you to actively claim it, usually through a specific link sent by SMS or email after your card is issued, or a redemption inside the bank's rewards portal. The subscription doesn't just show up on your account, and banks generally don't resend the activation link if you miss the original window, so it's worth checking your welcome kit or the bank's app the same week your card arrives.
The renewal trap
Most complimentary OTT memberships cover only the first year. After that, the subscription typically auto-renews using the same card on file, at the platform's regular price, unless you cancel it yourself before the renewal date. This is the single most common way people end up paying full price for a subscription they thought was still free, the free period simply ended without an obvious notification.
What concierge service actually covers
Concierge lines are genuinely useful for things like securing a hard-to-get restaurant reservation, arranging flowers or gifts, or general travel planning assistance, but they don't cover emergencies, aren't a replacement for travel insurance, and response times vary a lot by issuer. Treat it as a convenience service, not a safety net.
A quick checklist
- Activate the OTT membership immediately after your card arrives, rather than assuming it's automatic.
- Set a reminder near the one-year mark to cancel or downgrade before the auto-renewal charge hits.
- Save the concierge number in your phone if you think you'll actually use it, since it's easy to forget it exists.
