How to Foreclose a Credit Card EMI Early
What foreclosure actually means here
If you've converted a purchase or balance into EMI, foreclosing it means paying off whatever's left of the outstanding principal in one go, instead of waiting out the remaining monthly installments. Doing this stops future interest on the remaining tenure from accruing, which is the whole appeal.
What it costs
Almost no bank lets you foreclose for free. A typical foreclosure fee runs 2% to 5% of the outstanding principal at the time of closure, plus 18% GST on that fee. On a ₹40,000 outstanding EMI balance foreclosed at a 3% fee, that's ₹1,200 plus GST, roughly ₹1,416, just to close it early.
Where the breakeven point actually sits
Take a ₹60,000 EMI at 15% a year over 12 months. With 10 months left, the remaining interest still to be paid works out to roughly ₹4,500, well above a typical 3% foreclosure fee on the remaining principal (around ₹1,500 to ₹1,800 at that point), so foreclosing clearly wins. With only 2 months left on the same EMI, the remaining interest still owed is closer to ₹700, less than the foreclosure fee would cost on the still-substantial remaining principal. Past a certain point late in the tenure, foreclosing actually costs more than just paying out the last couple of installments as scheduled, the crossover typically happens somewhere in the back third of the tenure, though the exact point depends on your specific rate and fee.
Does foreclosing actually save money?
Usually yes early in a tenure, but the math depends on how much is left. Do the comparison before requesting it: check your remaining principal, your EMI's interest rate, and the number of installments left, against the foreclosure fee your bank quotes. Most banking apps show this breakdown when you initiate the request, before you confirm.
How to actually do it
Foreclosure is usually requested through your bank's app or net banking, under the EMI or loan management section for your card, or by calling customer care. The bank will show the exact foreclosure amount, including the fee and GST, before you confirm the payment.
