HDFC SmartBuy Explained: How the Portal Actually Boosts Your Reward Points
What SmartBuy actually is
SmartBuy is HDFC Bank's own shopping and booking portal, for flights, hotels, buses, trains, and gift vouchers across a range of brands. The catch, and the reason it's popular, is that paying through SmartBuy with your HDFC credit card earns a multiplied reward rate compared to making the same booking or purchase directly on the brand's own website with the same card.
How the multiplier actually works
Booking flights, hotels, or select vouchers through SmartBuy earns accelerated reward points, commonly 3X the card's base rate on many cards, though the exact multiplier depends on your specific card and category, and has been adjusted over time (some cards saw multipliers reduced from as high as 5X or 10X in early 2026). Super-premium cards generally get higher multipliers than entry-level ones on the same category.
The difference on an actual booking
Say your card earns 1 point per ₹150 spent normally, and 3X through SmartBuy. Book a ₹40,000 flight directly on the airline's site and you'd earn roughly 267 points. Book the identical flight, same fare, same dates, through SmartBuy instead, and the 3X multiplier takes that to around 800 points, more than 500 extra points for making zero changes to the actual trip. At a typical redemption value of ₹0.50 to ₹1 a point, that gap alone is worth roughly ₹250 to ₹500, for the cost of one extra click before booking.
The voucher mechanic, and why it's a separate lever
Beyond direct bookings, SmartBuy also sells digital gift vouchers for travel and shopping brands, sometimes at an upfront discount to face value. The trick some cardholders use: buy a discounted voucher through SmartBuy, then apply it toward a booking on the brand's own site during that brand's separate sale or promotion, stacking the SmartBuy discount on top of whatever deal the brand itself is running.
What to actually watch for
- Redemption caps. On flight and hotel bookings, reward point redemption is often capped at a percentage of the total value, commonly around 70%, meaning you'll still need to pay a portion in cash or on the card regardless of how many points you have.
- Crediting delays. Reward points from SmartBuy transactions typically post within 90 days, not immediately, which matters if you're timing a redemption around a specific trip.
- Multipliers change. HDFC has adjusted SmartBuy's reward rates before, so a multiplier you read about online may not match what's live on the portal today. Check the current rate inside the app before assuming a specific multiplier.
Is it worth using over booking direct?
If you're already going to book a flight, hotel, or buy a gift voucher on your HDFC card, routing it through SmartBuy costs nothing extra and earns more reward points for the identical purchase. The only real downside is the extra step of going through the portal first, and occasionally a narrower selection of specific fare classes or hotel rates than booking direct.
