How Airline and Hotel Mile Transfers From Credit Card Points Actually Work
What a transfer partner actually is
Some premium cards let you move your accumulated reward points out of the bank's own points currency and into an airline's frequent flyer program or a hotel chain's loyalty program instead, at a set conversion ratio. Once transferred, those points become miles or hotel points, governed entirely by that airline or hotel's own redemption rules, not the bank's.
Which banks actually offer this
In India, this is mostly a premium and super-premium card feature, HDFC's top-tier cards carry the widest transfer network, over 20 partners including programs like Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Marriott Bonvoy, often at a 1:1 ratio. Axis Bank's higher-tier cards support a smaller set of partners, and American Express offers its own transfer options through Membership Rewards. Entry-level and mid-tier cards generally don't offer this feature at all, points on those cards typically redeem only through the bank's own catalog or statement credit.
The same 50,000 points, two very different outcomes
Redeemed through a bank's own catalog at a typical ₹0.25 a point, 50,000 points is worth about ₹12,500 in vouchers or statement credit. Transfer that same 50,000 points at 1:1 to an airline partner instead, and it could cover a significant chunk of a business class award seat that would otherwise cost ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 or more in cash, depending on the route and season. The points didn't change, only where they went, but the outcome ranges from a modest voucher to a flight that would have cost several times the catalog value.
Why the ratio is the entire ballgame
A 1:1 transfer to a program with genuinely valuable redemptions, business class awards, high-season hotel nights, can be worth several times what the same points would fetch in a bank's cashback or voucher catalog. A worse ratio, say 2 bank points for 1 mile, cuts that value significantly, sometimes enough to make transferring pointless compared to a simpler cash-value redemption. The ratio and the destination program's own award chart both matter, not just the fact that a transfer option exists.
Important limits to know before you transfer
Transfers are one-way and irreversible, and you can't transfer between two different banks' point currencies, HDFC points can't become Axis points, for instance. Partner programs also change over time as part of the same devaluation pattern that affects reward programs generally, so a partner you're counting on today isn't guaranteed to still be available when you're ready to redeem. Check the current partner list and ratio before building a redemption plan around a specific transfer.
