RuPay Credit Card UPI Charges Above ₹2,000: What Changed
The short answer: you don't pay this
For RuPay credit card transactions on UPI above ₹2,000, an interchange fee, commonly around 2%, applies, but it's charged to the merchant, not to you. This is standard interchange, the same category of fee that applies to card swipes generally, it's just been extended to cover RuPay-on-UPI transactions above that threshold. As the customer, the amount that leaves your account is exactly the transaction amount, nothing added on top.
Why ₹2,000 specifically
Transactions of ₹2,000 or less on RuPay credit cards via UPI generally carry no merchant interchange fee at all, which is meant to keep everyday small-value UPI payments cheap for merchants to accept. The fee only kicks in above that threshold, and even then, it's structured as a merchant cost of accepting the payment, not a customer cost of making one.
Does splitting a payment into smaller chunks help anyone?
Not really, and it's worth addressing directly since the idea comes up. Splitting a ₹5,000 purchase into three separate ₹2,000-ish UPI payments to dodge the interchange fee doesn't benefit you as the customer either way, since you were never the one paying it. It also doesn't reliably help the merchant, most payment gateways and QR setups aren't designed around manually splitting a single purchase into multiple transactions, and doing so can look like unusual activity worth flagging on either side. There's no genuine reason for a shopper to think about this threshold at all when deciding how to pay.
Could this ever get passed on to you?
Not legally, and not without violating the same rules that govern card swipe charges generally. A merchant adding this interchange cost as a visible surcharge on your bill would be inconsistent with network and RBI transparency requirements around undisclosed charges. If you ever see an extra charge specifically for paying via RuPay UPI, it's worth questioning it the same way you'd question an undisclosed card surcharge.
Why this matters for choosing how you pay
None of this changes what a RuPay-on-UPI payment costs you as a shopper, it's still free to use for a purchase, regardless of the amount. Where it does matter is on the merchant side: some smaller merchants have gotten more selective about accepting RuPay credit card UPI for larger transactions specifically because of this fee, worth knowing if you notice a merchant nudging you toward a different payment method for a bigger purchase.
