What Is a Welcome Bonus, and Why the Fine Print Matters More Than the Number

What a welcome bonus actually is

A welcome bonus is a one-time reward, extra points, a cash credit, a voucher, given for opening a new card, almost always conditional on hitting a minimum spend within a set window after approval, commonly the first 30 to 90 days. It's separate from the card's ongoing reward rate, a one-off incentive to get you using the card early, not a recurring benefit.

The two numbers that actually matter, not the headline

The advertised bonus value is only half the story. The two conditions that determine whether you'll actually get it are the minimum spend requirement and the time window to hit it. A "₹5,000 bonus" attached to a ₹1,00,000 spend requirement within 60 days is a very different offer for someone whose typical monthly spend is ₹15,000 than for someone who spends ₹40,000 a month, the first person may simply never clear the threshold in time.

Two spenders, same offer, different outcomes

Take that same ₹1,00,000-in-60-days offer. Someone whose actual monthly spend runs ₹40,000 clears it comfortably within the window, roughly ₹80,000 across two months, no behavior change required, and the bonus is close to free money. Someone spending ₹15,000 a month is nowhere close, ₹30,000 over the same 60 days, and would need to more than triple their normal spending, pulling forward purchases or manufacturing spend, just to qualify. The exact same advertised bonus is a genuine freebie for one person and a bad trade for the other, purely based on whether their normal spending already clears the bar.

What resets the clock or voids the bonus

The spend window usually starts from card approval or first transaction, not from whenever you get around to using the card seriously, so delaying activation eats into your own window. Some issuers also exclude certain transaction types, EMI conversions, wallet loads, fuel, from counting toward the bonus threshold the same way they exclude them from fee-waiver thresholds, worth checking before assuming all spend counts equally.

Is it worth chasing?

Only if the spend requirement reflects money you'd genuinely be spending anyway, not spending you'd pull forward or manufacture purely to hit the bonus. A welcome bonus is real value on spending you already planned to do; it's a bad trade if it pushes you into discretionary purchases you wouldn't otherwise make just to clear a threshold.
