Who Is Eligible for a Student Credit Card?

The age line that actually matters

You need to be 18 years old to hold a credit card in your own name in India. Below that, the only realistic option is an add-on card linked to a parent's existing account, which some banks allow from as young as 15.

Route 1: FD-backed, the most universally available

An FD-backed card works for almost any student regardless of income, since the deposit itself is the qualifying factor, not your income or credit history. Banks check that the deposit is genuinely in place and that your KYC documents are valid, that's essentially the entire eligibility bar. This is why it's the most consistently available route across issuers.

Route 2: add-on cards, eligibility sits with the parent

Here, the bank's eligibility check applies to the primary cardholder, your parent or guardian, not to you. If they already hold an active card in good standing, adding you as a supplementary user typically doesn't require a separate credit check on your end at all. The tradeoff is that spending on the add-on card is the primary cardholder's legal responsibility, not yours independently.

Route 3: income-linked, the least common

A small number of banks will consider a very basic unsecured card for a student with a part-time job or stipend, provided your account shows regular, verifiable credits, commonly over a three-month window. This route depends heavily on the specific bank's policy and isn't something to count on as a fallback if the other two aren't available to you.

What "eligible" doesn't mean here

Being a college student isn't itself a qualifying criterion the way income or a credit score is for adults. Your college ID mainly serves as identity and age verification, the bank's real decision is still driven by which of the three routes above you're applying through.

Frequently asked questions

Which route builds credit history fastest?
The FD-backed route, since the card and its repayment history are entirely in your own name from day one, unlike an add-on card.

Can I have both an add-on card and my own FD-backed card?
Yes, there's no rule against holding both, some students do exactly this to get spending flexibility from the add-on while building independent history through the FD-backed card.

A quick checklist

  • Confirm you're 18+ before applying for a card in your own name; under that, add-on is your only route.
  • Decide between FD-backed and add-on based on whether you want independent credit history or a lower-effort start.
  • Keep ID and address proof ready regardless of which route you choose.
