Amex Reward Multiplier Explained: From GyftR to ShopWise

What the Reward Multiplier actually is

Reward Multiplier is American Express India's version of the accelerated-rewards shopping portal every major issuer now runs, alongside HDFC's SmartBuy and Axis Bank's GRAB Deals. Buy an e-voucher for a partner brand through the platform using your Amex card, and you earn a multiplied Membership Rewards points rate, commonly 5X to 10X the card's base earn rate, depending on your specific card, well above what the same spend would earn as a normal purchase.

What that multiplier is worth on a real purchase

Buy a ₹5,000 e-voucher for a retail or dining brand through ShopWise on a card earning 1 point per ₹50 normally, that's 100 points at the base rate. At a 5X multiplier through the platform, the identical ₹5,000 spend earns roughly 500 points instead, at 10X on a higher-tier card, that climbs to 1,000. Since Membership Rewards points commonly redeem in the ₹0.50 to ₹1 range depending on the option, that spread, 100 points versus up to 1,000, is the difference between roughly ₹50 and ₹1,000 in redemption value on the exact same ₹5,000 spend.

The platform actually changed in 2026

For years, this ran through a platform called GyftR, which is why "Amex GyftR" is still the term a lot of cardholders search for. American Express replaced GyftR with a new platform called ShopWise from February 2026 onward. If you're looking for the old GyftR interface, it's no longer the current platform, ShopWise is where Amex Reward Multiplier purchases happen now.

What's actually different on ShopWise

Functionally, the core mechanic hasn't changed: you add e-vouchers from partner brands to a cart, check out using your Amex card, and receive the voucher digitally, code, PIN if applicable, and validity details sent by email and SMS. ShopWise expanded the partner brand catalog to over 200 brands across retail, dining, and travel, including well-known names like Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon, and Flipkart, a wider selection than GyftR carried toward the end of its run.

What to actually check before buying

Multiplier rates and partner brand availability change over time, and vouchers are typically final-sale once issued, so confirm the current multiplier for your specific card and the voucher's validity window before purchasing, rather than assuming a rate you saw referenced elsewhere still applies. As with other bank shopping portals, the accelerated points only apply to the voucher purchase transaction itself, not to however you later spend the voucher.
