Best Ways to Use Reward Points Before They Expire
How expiry actually works, and why it varies
Most Indian banks expire reward points somewhere between 2 and 3 years after they're earned, though the exact window varies: HDFC and SBI Card commonly run a 2-year validity, Axis Bank's EDGE Miles run closer to 3 years, and a small number of cards, like IDFC FIRST's Millennia, don't expire points at all.
Rolling expiry vs fixed-date expiry, in practice
On a rolling model, points earned in March 2024 expire in March 2026, and a separate batch earned in September 2024 expires in September 2026, each batch on its own two-year clock. On a fixed-date model, every point earned in the 2024 calendar year might instead expire on a single date, say March 31, 2027, regardless of whether it was earned in January or December. The practical difference matters: under a fixed date, points earned late in the year still get the full window others got, but you only need to track one date a year rather than a rolling batch for every earning period. Check which model your specific card uses rather than assuming, the two require genuinely different tracking habits.
How to actually check what's about to expire
Most banking apps show a points expiry date somewhere in the rewards section, though it's not always prominent on the main dashboard. Checking every few months, rather than only when you happen to think about it, is the only reliable way to catch points before they lapse, since there's no reminder notice guaranteed by default on every card.
What to actually do with points close to expiring
- Redeem for statement credit if nothing better is available quickly, a lower-value redemption still beats letting points expire to zero.
- Check for a transfer option if your card supports moving points to an airline or hotel partner, transferred points generally follow that program's own, often longer, expiry rules instead.
- Use them toward an upcoming purchase you were already planning, rather than a redemption you wouldn't otherwise choose, just to use the points up.
The habit that actually prevents this
Pick a recurring check, aligned with your card's renewal date or a fixed point each year, to review your points balance and expiry date. It's a five-minute habit that prevents the far more common failure mode: points quietly expiring untouched because nobody looked until it was too late.
