No-Cost EMI Cancellation Charges, Bank by Bank
The purchase gets refunded. The fee usually doesn't
If you cancel or return a product bought on no-cost EMI, the seller typically refunds the product's price, but the processing fee your bank charged when the EMI was set up, commonly ₹199 to ₹299 plus 18% GST, is often not reversed. Some banks refund the base processing fee but keep the GST portion, on the reasoning that GST was already remitted to the government and isn't theirs to return. The exact policy varies by bank, so it's worth checking before assuming a cancellation is entirely cost-free.
What foreclosing a no-cost EMI early costs
If you keep the product but want to pay off the remaining EMI installments early rather than cancelling, that's a separate scenario from a return, and it usually carries its own foreclosure fee, commonly 2% to 5% of the outstanding principal plus GST, similar to foreclosing any other credit card EMI.
What happens if you've already paid a few installments
Say you bought a ₹36,000 appliance on a 6-month no-cost EMI, ₹6,000 a month, and return it after the second installment has already been billed. You've paid ₹12,000 toward the product plus the processing fee. On a straightforward return, the seller refunds the ₹12,000 in product value, but the remaining four installments get cancelled rather than continuing to bill, and the processing fee stays with the bank regardless of how much of the plan you'd actually completed. The refund timeline for the product portion typically runs on the seller's own return policy, separate from and often slower than how quickly the EMI billing itself stops.
Timing matters more than people expect
If you cancel before your first EMI installment has actually been billed, some banks waive the processing fee entirely since the EMI plan never technically activated. Cancel after the first billing cycle has already generated a statement, and the fee is far more likely to stick, since the bank now treats the EMI as an active facility that was closed early rather than one that never started.
What to actually check before you buy on no-cost EMI
Before confirming a no-cost EMI purchase you might return, especially with clothing, electronics, or anything with a real return window, check your bank's specific processing fee and its cancellation policy on that fee. A ₹299 plus GST fee on a product you end up returning is a real cost that a lot of people don't budget for going in.
