Why Your Reward Points Are Worth Less Than You Think
Points are a currency the bank controls, not a fixed value
Every reward point has an implied rupee value, but that value isn't fixed the way ₹1 is always worth ₹1. It depends entirely on how you redeem, and banks structure their redemption catalog so that the easiest, most obvious options are usually the worst value.
The same 10,000 points, three ways
Redeem 10,000 points as statement credit at a typical ₹0.20 rate and you get ₹2,000, credited instantly, no research needed. Redeem the same 10,000 points against a catalog item, a gadget or appliance, and the effective rate often works out similar or slightly worse once you compare the item's actual market price, despite feeling like a more substantial reward. Transfer those same 10,000 points to a strong airline partner and use them against a well-priced award seat, and the effective value can climb to ₹0.60 to ₹1 a point, ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 worth of value from the identical starting balance. The points never changed, only the path they took to become money or its equivalent.
Where the value actually gets eroded
- Default redemption options are usually the weakest. Converting points to statement credit, the option most people reach for because it's simple, commonly values a point at somewhere between ₹0.15 and ₹0.25, well below what the same points are worth transferred to a good airline partner or redeemed against a genuinely well-priced catalog item.
- Catalog markups. Physical merchandise and gift voucher redemptions in a bank's rewards catalog often price items at a worse effective rate than statement credit, despite feeling like a more exciting redemption.
- Category and cap restrictions. Some of the best per-point value redemptions come with monthly or annual caps, once you've hit the cap, remaining points fall back to standard, lower-value options.
Where the real value actually sits
The strongest redemptions are almost always a genuine transfer to an airline or hotel partner, used against an award that would otherwise cost significantly more in cash, business class flights and peak-season hotel nights especially. The gap between a lazy statement-credit redemption and a well-planned transfer redemption can be a multiple, not a marginal difference.
What to actually do about it
Before redeeming, check what your specific points are worth across at least two or three redemption paths, statement credit, catalog, and transfer if available, rather than defaulting to whichever option is presented first in the app. The ten minutes spent comparing is often worth more than the redemption decision itself.
